The Springfield College baseball team returned from a week in Florida and was clipped by local-foe Westfield State, 5-1, on Tuesday at Archie Allen Field.

Westfield State's record improved to 3-6, while the Pride dropped to 4-6-1.  Springfield totaled three hits on the day, with Cadin Maynard (Waterford, Conn.) driving in the Pride's lone run of the day.

The visitors starting pitcher Ryan Donahue struck out 11 in six innings of work to earn the win on the mound, while the Owls Alex Martin totaled a game-high two hits.

In the opening inning, Westfield State used a two-out double to plate the game's first run.  In the third, the visitors added three more runs in the third as Justin Neidel lead off the frame with a solo homer and three batters later, Nick Marshall poked a two-run shot over the right centerfield fence to make it a 4-0 contest.

The Owls struck again with two outs in the sixth as with a run-scoring single, only to have the Pride answer back with a run of its own in the eighth as Max Giacco (Meriden, Conn.) crossed home plate with the bases loaded.  That would be all the scoring in the game as Westfield State was able to pull away with the win.

On Thursday, Springfield will make the quick trip to Elms for a 7 pm contest.
