Hampden County School Districts: Which ethnicity was most represented in 2024-25 school year?

Among the many ethnicities represented in Hampden County's student body, the most prevalent ethnicity enrolled in the 2024-25 school year was Hispanic, according to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Of the 61,596 students attending classes within Hampden County school districts, 44.2% were Hispanic. White students made up the second largest ethnic group among Hampden County's school districts, making up 39.6% of the student body.

In the previous school year, Hispanic students were also the most common ethnicity in Hampden County school districts, representing 44.2% of the student body.

West Springfield Public Schools had the most even distribution of races among the county school districts, which included 57.6% white students, 24.3% Hispanic, 7% Asian, 5.6% Black, 5.4% multiracial, and 0.1% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander students.

In the 2024-25 school year, the total number of students enrolled in school districts in the county dropped by 0.5% compared to the previous year.

The main offices of all school districts mentioned in the story are located in cities associated with Hampden County.

Massachusetts spends more money on K-12 education per pupil than most other states, ranking fifth in the nation, according to a 2023 report. The state allocates $22,913 per pupil, totaling $21.1 billion annually.

Taxpayers provide a significant portion of their income towards education, with state funding accounting for $9,210 per pupil and local funding providing $11,830 per pupil. The federal government contributes a relatively small amount.
