Of the 171 students who took part in the Math portion of the MCAS, 89.5% scored below proficiency in the 2022-23 school year, according to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

In comparison, 10.5% met the subject benchmarks and none exceeded them.

The number of Martin Luther King, Jr. Charter School of Excellence District students who failed their Math assessments rose by 1.3% from the previous school year.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Charter School of Excellence District roughly covers schools within Hampden County and has a main office in Springfield.

In the 2022-23 school year, 467,110 students took the Math test in Massachusetts with 58% failing the exam, 2.2% less than the year before.

According to a 2025 analysis from WalletHub, Massachusetts education system was considered the best in the nation, based on factors such as class size, student performance, funding, school safety, and teacher qualifications.
