In 2023-24 school year 85.2% of Martin Luther King, Jr. Charter School of Excellence District students failed the Science portion of MCAS

Of the 54 students who took part in the Science portion of the MCAS, 85.2% scored below proficiency in the 2023-24 school year, according to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

In comparison, 14.8% met the subject benchmarks and none exceeded them.

The number of Martin Luther King, Jr. Charter School of Excellence District students who failed their Science assessments rose by 4.5% from the previous school year.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Charter School of Excellence District roughly covers schools within Hampden County and has a main office in Springfield.

In the 2023-24 school year, 199,813 students took the Science test in Massachusetts with 55.6% failing the exam, 2.8% less than the year before.

According to a 2025 analysis from WalletHub, Massachusetts education system was considered the best in the nation, based on factors such as class size, student performance, funding, school safety, and teacher qualifications.
